Annual Dinner 2014

You and your guests are warmly invited to the Stanford Alumni Association's Annual Dinner on Tuesday, 9 December 2014. The Annual Dinner is the SAA's major event for 2014 and we hope you will be able to join us.

We are delighted to announce that Mr. Malcolm Turnbull MP, Federal Member for Wentworth and Minister for Communications, will be this year's keynote speaker.

As is the case every year, the annual dinner is a great opportunity to catch up with Stanford alums you know and get to know others whom you may not have had the opportunity to meet. Partners and special guests are encouraged to attend. The SAA would also particularly like to welcome recent Stanford undergraduates and a special discount rate will be available to make it easier for you to attend.

The format of the evening is pre-dinner drinks and aperitifs, followed by a short AGM for the Stanford Australia Foundation and the Stanford Australia Association (15 minutes), the keynote presentation, and dinner. This leaves plenty of time to enjoy stimulating company over a drink and dinner. RSVP now to reserve a space.

About the speaker: Mr. Malcolm Turnbull

Malcolm Turnbull is a Liberal member of the House of Representatives and is currently Minister for Communications and Broadband. He was Leader of the Opposition from 16 September 2008 to 1 December 2009 and prior to that Shadow Treasurer.

Elected to Federal Parliament as the Member for Wentworth in 2004, Malcolm was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister with responsibility for national water policy, and in 2007 appointed to Cabinet as the Minister for Environment and Water Resources.

Malcolm graduated from Sydney University with degrees in Arts and Law. He was a Rhodes scholar and completed a further law degree at Oxford. Malcolm worked as a journalist both in Australia and the United Kingdom before he began legal practice in 1980. He successfully defended the former MI5 agent Peter Wright in his efforts to publish his memoirs, Spycatcher.

In 1987 Malcolm established his own investment banking firm and during that time co-founded a number of Australian companies including OzEmail Ltd - Australia's first large Internet service provider. He joined Goldman Sachs & Co in 1997 as Chairman of its Australian business, becoming a partner of the global firm in 1998.

Malcolm has initiated numerous policy and research projects in areas such as education, indigenous affairs, home ownership affordability, balancing work and family responsibilities and national population and fertility policy. He was Chairman of the Menzies Research Centre between 2002 and 2004.
